Level 1 vs Level 2
Edexcel releases SPBs for the units every autumn. They release both Level 1 and Level 2 SPBs. Level 1 SPBs have unit codes D10x (where x is the unit number). Level 2 SPBs have unit codes D20x (where x is the unit number). For example, D101 is the code for unit 1 (Using ICT) at Level 1 and D203 stands for unit 3 (Graphics) at Level 2.
Students working on a Level 1 SPB can be given guidance on how to tackle the SPB. The amount of marks they get will be determined by how much guidance you have given.
Students working on Level 2 SPBS are expected to work on the SPB without guidance. Obviously, there will still be some teacher feedback. What Edexcel is trying to say is that the decisions about how to tackle the SPB must be the students’. Your role is similar to that of a line manager. They inform you about their progress, you check if they are working according to plan, you evaluate their work and suggest improvements.
You should base your judgement on these questions:
Was this student’s Key Stage 3 attainment level 5 or above? Will the student be able to read the SPB and carry out the required tasks with minimum input from me? It the answer is yes to both, Level 2 is it. If the answer is no to any the questions, please consider Level 1.
It is useful to know that students can complete a unit at level 1 and complete another one at level 2.
